POSSIBILITIES AT #4


“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible!’” – Audrey Hepburn

This quote would make a perfect postcard, poster or bumper sticker. Slap an iconic photo of actress Audrey Hepburn, with her warm smile and trendsetting fashion, on it and they would sell like hotcakes. It is a short, succinct, sweet sentiment.

Like the movie star who said it, this quote exudes positivity. Who doesn’t need more of that? Apparently not many as this positive quote rose to #4 on the list of most popular quotes of 2018.

Two themes emerged from the countdown of the most popular quotes in 2018: nostalgia and TV or movie theme songs. This quote hits on both counts.

Popular in the 1970s the Mary Tyler Moore Show has endured as a television situation comedy legend. It airs in reruns to this day. The opening theme song credits, with the star cheerily throwing her hat up in the cold Minnesota air, makes people feel warm and fuzzy and it takes us back to a simpler time. A time we all long for and the show’s main character, Mary Richards, is a friend we could all use. Those warm, fuzzy, friendly feelings pushed this quote all the way up to #5 on the most popular quotes list.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE


"Thank you for your service." It's a simple sentence, but one we should say a lot more often. My wife and I got to say it to an appreciative Vietnam Vet last night. He sat at the table across from us at the restaurant, in his wheelchair. We used the sentence as a springboard to a conversation about our appreciation for the sacrifices of the US military. You can bet that when the subject of former Senator and Secretary of State John Kerry came up, this Vietnam Vet was plenty mad about Kerry's comment that American military personnel are dumb. He was furious, as were my wife and I. Our restaurant Vet was a nice man. A hero, too.

MOVIE MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH



I really enjoyed the film "October Baby." I would highly recommend it. It is a moving, well-acted production. I look for the lead actress in the film to be a big star. Plus, it was nice to see some familiar faces from the past in strong roles: John Schneider and Jasmine Guy. Guy was especially compelling. In so many movies I get antsy because they are too long, or they don't hold my attention. This one captivated me through out. I took away from the film a strong message of forgiveness. Of course, it also has a powerful pro-life/adoption plotline which I applaud. As a society we must be confronted with the truth that abortion is not something you can rationalize away. It is a matter of life and death. And we must choose life.

NOSTALGIA AT NUMBER 7

Just as nostalgia fanned the flames of a quote from the Cheers TV theme song to number 11, it strikes again with this song lyric from Carole King. A popular song back in the 1970s, Where You Lead also serves as the theme song for the hit TV show Gilmore Girls. With reruns airing on the UP network and newer episodes available via Netflix, the public indeed seems nostalgic for mom and daughter Lorelei and Rory Gilmore. And nostalgic for their theme song as well. Nostalgia gets this chorus up to the seventh spot of the most popular quotes of 2018.

GIVE THE GIFT OF GRATEFULNESS

Two Christmases ago my wife and I bought a gift for our son that we forgot to give him. It was the talking phone from Toy Story 3. We bought it in September when it was on sale and hid it away to save as a Christmas present. The problem is we forgot about it and when December rolled around the toy phone never got placed under the Christmas tree. Luckily, in November of the following year, we stumbled upon the undelivered present and were able to give it to him that next holiday season.



Just as we (temporarily) forgot, or were unable to give our gift to our son, William Arthur Ward reminds us that forgetting to share gratitude is a missed opportunity to bless someone else. It is, in essence, a failure to give a good gift to someone we care about. A failure to encourage or thank someone.



Ward’s comment rings true in or out of the Christmas season and his gift of wisdom about gratefulness was a present that rose to the 6th most popular quote of 2018.

FAMILY V. FRIENDS


“One loyal friend is worth ten thousand relatives.” – Euripides

When I need advice or support, other than my wife, there are three people I gravitate toward:

1)      My oldest brother Tim

2)      My best friend Jared

3)      My substitute mom Nancy

Two of those individuals above are friends and not family members. For the most part, I think I agree with Euripedes. It is often easier to seek out friends in times of crisis. In many cases, family members are the cause of the crisis so you can’t reach out to them. The ancient Greek playwright, author of poems and tragedies, appears to still have his finger on the pulse of modern family dynamics with the 8th most popular quote of 2018.

And it got people singing along to this quote all the way to making it the 9th most popular quote of 2018.

I suffer from so much self-doubt in my life. (Don’t we all?) I doubt my talents. I doubt my finances. I doubt my parenting abilities. I doubt my God.

President Teddy Roosevelt speaks right into that pervasive self-doubt with a simple but profound statement reminding us all to believe. Not only to believe, but to realize how powerful that single act of belief puts you on your road to success. Have some faith and you’ve already halfway reached your goal.

Life is so stressful that we live in a world starved for nostalgia. That’s why movie sequels are so common. It is why Friends re-runs are still so popular via NetFlix 15+ years later. And it is the reason so many acclaimed movies are now being turned into Broadway plays and musicals. We are people who seek comfort in the familiar.



This Cheers quote screams nostalgia and familiarity. We “wanna be where everybody knows our name,” knows our dreams, knows our needs. And that nostalgia fueled this TV theme song line becoming the 11th most popular quote of 2018.

METAPHLOR FOR LIFE

“Don’t let perfect be the enemy of the good.” French Philosopher Voltaire is believed to have expressed this sentiment first. This weekend, I lived it. The Mrs. and I decided to redo our kitchen floor. My wife did most of the work and she did a great job. I ran the errands to Home Depot for more supplies and worked on some of the more difficult corners and spots. It took longer and was much more difficult than I anticipated. I got frustrated and paranoid, discouraged about how bad some of my spots were turning out. So much so that I completely overlooked how much of an improvement the new floor is. No, it isn’t perfect. I made several mistakes. But it is 100% better than the scratched, marked up, water damaged, dirt-encrusted, holes in the floor tile we had down before. My wife is pleased. It looks decent. We worked hard. Let the frustration and disappointment go, Rich. Stephanie had to remind me of that with this side by side photograph. Maybe my floor experience is a metaphor (or methaphlor) for life. What do we avoid doing or appreciating because we expect perfect when better and decent will more than do?

I collect quotes. I have for years. My student government office in college was covered with a cacophony of quotes. Important things people have said.

Famous people and not so famous people. Sometimes from friends, even things I have said.

Celebrities, athletes, politicians can all say something profound at one time or another.

Occasionally they are not quotes from real, historical people but from books, movies, television shows or song lyrics.

Usually I collect quotes about encouragement, how to encourage others. Closely related to that are sayings about friendship, caring and smiling.



“Smile! It increases your face value.” – Dolly Parton as Truvy in Steel Magnolias.



Every three days at work I change my outgoing email message so that it features a new quote. I regularly get feedback from coworkers about their favorites, what speaks to them, inspires them. This quote is the most well-liked of all:



“Worry less about who you might offend and worry more about who you might inspire.” – Tim Allen, as “Mike Baxter” in Last Man Standing.



I do believe quotes have the potential to inspire, bless, motivate.



“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing. That’s why we recommend it daily.” – Zig Ziglar



Words have tremendous power. Let’s not pretend otherwise. The Bible agrees with me.

Collecting quotes allows me to learn from the words of others who are wiser than I am. Memorizing them, categorizing them, sharing them with others feeds my soul.

I can easily list what I think are some of my accomplishments. Sadly, I am not as in tune with the above reminder from author B.R. Jensen. I should care more about who I have blessed and how often I have been a blessing. How do we, as a society, move toward a place where we value one another more than we value our own success?

During the workweek I send out, potentially, hundreds of emails. I work for a nonprofit organization that employees over 70,000 people and my department has the opportunity to touch each of those individuals.

At the close of each email I post a quote from my collection of favorites. I change the quote on my outgoing work email messages once every three days. In 2018, there were 20 email messages that drew positive feedback from my coworkers. I have collected those quotes and ranked them based upon amount of feedback into the top 20 for the year. These are quotes that inspired my colleagues, moved them or made them laugh.

Nowadays Rebecca St. James is best known as the older sibling of For King and Country bandmates and brothers, Luke and Joel. But before her brothers were famous, she was the star of the family as a rising contemporary Christian singer. Side by Side is a cut off her 1994 self-titled album.



Every three work days I change the quote at the end of my outgoing emails. The quote is always intended to be something inspirational and usually focuses on one of four topics:

1) encouragement

2) friendship

3) smiling or

4) faith.

Sometimes it is a famous (or not so famous) quote, or a pop culture reference, or a song lyrics, or even a Bible verse. Because the department I work for has to interact with everyone, I get to send a lot of emails and I have the potential of reaching all 70,000+ employees. Normally, my quotes don’t get a response. But every once in a while someone will email me back and say something like “I love that quote,” or “I really needed that today.” I decided to track the ones that got the most positive feedback. There were 20 that received positive feedback. The lyric at the top of the post is the 13th most popular quote for 2018.

I wonder if Miley and her new hubby Liam Hemsworth danced to this song at their recent wedding. It is a highly emotional, moving song and Cyrus’ vocal performance is compelling. It compelled this quote all the way to number 15 on the list of most popular quotes from 2018.

THE WRITE STUFF

I've probably written more than 10,000 thank you notes in my life. People say that in the age of cell phones and email, handwritten notes are becoming a thing of the past. I hope not. It's odd enough to some people when they get a personal, handwritten note from me, a man. Men don't write thank you notes, they say. Well, this one does. Always have. It wasn't so much the way I was raised, just something I always enjoyed doing. And not just thank you notes, but notes of encouragement or praise as well. On the average, I craft at least one handwritten note per day. I find it helps me relax, take the focus off myself and think about others. I would highly recommend it. Especially if you are male. Write a thank you note to someone and shock them. In the Bible we are admonished to "encourage one another." A written note is one of the easiest and more personal ways to do just that.

CARNY ENCOURAGEMENT: A SHORT STORY

KEY VERSE:

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13

ESSAY:

“5 darts for $5. Pop 3 balloons and win a BIIIG prize,” he barked.

As the carnival crowd ignored him and bustled by, he darted behind the booth for another drag on his cigarette. When he popped his head back around, he was startled to see her, as if one of his giant balloons had just exploded.

“Hi dad,” she said.

With the hot sun beating down on his balloon booth he shielded his eyes, pretending to look at her. But it wasn’t really the sun, it was the shame that made him avert her gaze.

“Mom told me where I could find you. She said you had trouble finding work and this was the only place that would hire you.” She paused to fight back the tears. She didn’t realize this would be so hard. His obvious discomfort wasn’t making it any easier.

“I’m sorry I never came to visit you,” she continued.

This was too painful for him and he turned to walk away, though he had no escape. She noticed how thin his frame was, how old and tired he looked. Sure, carny workers always look old and tired, but this was different. She had never seen him like this before.

“Don’t go,” she gasped. “It wasn’t just you. I never visited mom, either. When I came back to town, I was shocked that you two were still together. That she had waited for you.”

That made him smile and he stopped in his tracks.

“She said she decided to forgive you and that she still loved you. Always loved you. She waited five long years.”

“I don’t deserve your mother,” he stammered.  He thought his baby girl was gone forever. Instead she was here, and he was dirty and smelly. He had never wanted her to see him like this. He grabbed some balloons and began blowing them up, trying to keep busy. He needed something to do with his nervous energy.

“I didn’t wait,” she sobbed. Without realizing it, her crying had caused quite a commotion. Carnival goers, always eager to see a freak show, began to stop and stare.

“I got out of town as fast as I could. The only reason I got all those college scholarships is that people felt sorry for me. The good girl from the good family, until the dad got charged with a felony. I was so embarrassed. And I was so angry at you.” The sheer force of that sentence, the first time she had ever spoken those words, compelled her to look directly at him. For one brief moment they locked eyes and he was stung by her anger. He stopped exhaling and the balloon in his mouth shriveled up and fell to the floor. He wished he could do the same.

“My anger was so out of control I ended up following in your footsteps. I became the very thing I hated.”

Those words were a dagger. The last thing a father ever wants to do is hurt his child and he could see how deep a wound he inflicted. He reached out for her but shrunk back in fear.

“I didn’t come back to town because I wanted to. I had to. My anger consumed me, and I couldn’t focus on school. I got expelled for cheating. Like father, like daughter.”

As he began to cry, he noticed the onlookers and tried to shoo them away. He popped a balloon to break the tension and yelled, “Nothing to see here, folks. Move along.”

She thought he was trying to shut her up and she needed to finish. She had to get this off her chest. “No, I’ll pay,” she blurted. “Here’s $5” as she fumbled through her purse. She started talking faster, afraid that he would bolt.

“I came across the letters you wrote me from prison. I had never opened them. I was too good for you. You had hurt me, and I wanted nothing to do with you. But then when I saw them again, I thought maybe it will be comforting to read about someone’s life that is more messed up than mine.”

An older lady from the crowd approached and handed her a tissue. She wiped away a tear and let out a sigh that could have deflated a row of balloons.

“But I was wrong,” she admitted. “Your letters weren’t messed up. You told me how sorry you were. That you loved me. You took responsibility for your mistake. You shared about the Bible study in your cellblock and asking God to forgive you. You sounded so at peace. And I didn’t have any peace. So, I knew I needed to forgive you.”

Murmurs rose up from the crowd like an episode of the Jerry Springer show. Some agreed with her, some walked way in disgust. She turned to look at the crowd, as if to persuade them. “Mom and I agreed. I need to forgive you. I do forgive you, dad.”

Applause broke out amongst her supporters as she looked back at her dad. He ran to the edge of the booth and leaped over the counter. He swung her around in his arms as the remaining crowd hollered their support.

APPLICATION:

The old adage is you always hurt the ones you love. And it is often true. Those nearest and dearest to us can cause the deepest wounds. Who, in your life, do you need to forgive? Remember that we are admonished to forgive as Christ has forgiven us. Even if that person doesn’t ask for forgiveness. Even if they don’t deserve forgiveness. Who is God calling you to forgive? Begin the act of forgiveness by writing that person a letter. You don’t even have to mail it. Just put the words of forgiveness down on paper. Ask God to use this simple exercise to move in your heart toward forgiving that loved one, that coworker, that friend.

HOW TO BE HUMBLE



James 4:10 says, "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up." This verse has always intrigued me. Biblical commentaries I have read on it seem stress that it means we should always acknowledge our sinfulness and dependence on God and never think ourselves equal to or greater than Him. As a Christian, it felt like I was always taught it meant we needed to not draw attention to ourselves, don't be conceited and self-promote. But as a writer, if I don't promote my works, no one will buy my books and no magazines will publish my articles. So I always felt like this verse put me in a quandary. I wonder how other Christian creative people feel. I am a performer. I thrive on being the center of attention. Again, this verse always seemed to put a damper on that desire. I am 51 years old and still trying to figure all of this stuff out.

WORDS OF STEEL:



“Smile. It increases your face value.” – Dolly Parton as Truvy in Steel Magnolias



Steel Magnolias is a classic film and a favorite in my house. Sure, many would call it a chick flick, I don't care because I liked it, too. This 1989 drama with a southern flair for comedy garnered (at least) one major Academy Award nomination for Julia Roberts as Best Supporting Actress. It was her first major film role and she shined like a true southern belle. The story is part drama, part comedy, part tragedy, detailing the turbulent relationship between a Louisiana mother and her grown daughter, along with the support they receive from four other strong southern women who all frequent the same beauty salon.



Steel Magnolias featured a stellar cast as Roberts was joined by Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis and Daryl Hannah. This movie will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will make you think. And it deserved much more praise than it got, if for no other reason than the assortment of classic quotes from the film. Here are just a few of my other favorites:

During the workweek I send out, potentially, hundreds of emails. I work for a nonprofit organization that employees over 70,000 people and my department has the opportunity to touch each of those individuals.



At the close of each email I post a quote from my collection of favorites. I change the quote on my outgoing work email messages once every three days. In 2018, there were 20 email messages that drew positive feedback from my coworkers. I have collected those quotes and ranked them based upon amount of feedback into the top 20 for the year. These are quotes that inspired my colleagues, moved them or made them laugh.



The Dolly Parton movie quote at the top of this article made people smile and moved it all the way up to the 18th most popular quote of 2018.
